The products we carry are one-of-a kind. The sandals are made with recycled and natural products such as wool, cotton and leather. Every step involved in the weaving process, from the raising of the sheep, the carding, spinning and dyeing of the wool to the actual weaving of the sandals, is done entirely by hand using the traditional, time-honored weaving techniques of the Zapotec people.
THE WEAVING PROCESS
The Zapotec Indians of Mexico have been weaving textiles for over 2,000 years.
Hand-carding is a traditional method to separate and straighten wool fibers to prepare them as textiles. The result is a batt or rolag of lofty wool that is next spun into a "single" strand on the spinning wheel.
The wool dyeing process requires the participation of every family member, since it involves boiling the yarn along with natural dyes until the desired color is achieved. The dyes are traditionally made from vegetable sources, such as alfalfa for green, chamomile for yellow, pecan shells for brown, cochineal insect which is carefully cultivated on cactus pads and dried, to be later ground into a fine powder that produces the richest natural red and purple dyes.
Tanning is the process of treating skins and hides of animals to produce leather. All chemical tanning operations are carried out with the use of the drum--the typical machine for tannery. It consists in a wooden cylinder rotating around its own axis. It is filled with water, chemical reagents and skins. Skins are salted with common salt, which penetrates very quickly into the fibers, helping to a partial removal of water. The uniqueness of the result is given by the ability and the skill of our experienced craftsmen.
